On February 2, 2024, concerns were raised over the governor’s Executive Budget proposal, particularly regarding school funding in the state. The proposal includes the elimination of the “hold harmless” provision for school funding, which would lead to a significant $168 million reduction in education aid for 337 school districts across the state. Additionally, there are plans to alter the foundation aid formula, potentially resulting in a further reduction of $245 million in aid.

Amidst a budget that is set to grow by $5.9 billion in state operating funds, criticisms have been directed towards certain allocations within the proposal. For instance, $2.4 billion is earmarked for illegal migrants, and $40 million is allocated for theft prevention measures. These allocations have raised eyebrows, with concerns being voiced about their necessity when compared to the proposed cuts in education funding.

An unnamed individual expressed their dissatisfaction with the proposed cuts, stating, "It is clear the governor is not interested in setting our kids up for success." They further added, "I strongly OPPOSE these cuts and will fight to ensure all schools get their fair share of education funding in this year’s state budget."

In response to the potential impact on schools' fiscal stability, a call to action was made, urging individuals to sign a petition to advocate for fair education funding and to push back against the proposed changes. The message conveyed a plea to the governor to reconsider the priorities outlined in the budget and to prioritize the needs of schools and students.

As discussions continue regarding the state budget and its implications for education funding, the voices advocating for the preservation of school funding remain steadfast in their stance against the proposed cuts.
