State Senator Joseph Griffo has launched the annual Cell Phones For Soldiers collection drive in collaboration with the Central New York Veterans Outreach Center and Assemblyman Robert Smullen. The initiative, which coincides with Military Family Appreciation Month and Veterans Day, aims to support deployed troops by providing them with free communication services.
Each donated mobile device valued at $5 allows Cell Phones For Soldiers to provide 2.5 hours of talk time to service members via calling cards. The recycled devices’ proceeds are used to purchase these cards and other communication services for both domestic and overseas troops. Additionally, some phones will be given directly to veterans as part of a new initiative, offering them unlimited talk and text.
The collection drive runs from November 4 through December 6, with several drop-off locations throughout Senator Griffo’s district, including libraries and markets in Rome, Utica, New Hartford, Bridgewater, Oneida, Canastota, West Winfield, and Sherburne.
Senator Griffo noted the significance of staying connected during the holidays: “The simple sound of a loved one’s voice can go a long way to lift their spirits.” Vincent Scalise from the Central New York Veterans Outreach Center expressed gratitude for Senator Griffo’s efforts: “This annual collection drive has helped many men and women serving in our military connect with their families.”
Founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist in 2004, Cell Phones For Soldiers has provided over 300 million minutes of free talk time through its Minutes That Matter program. It distributes around 1,500 calling cards weekly to various military-related locations. Since its inception, it has recycled over 25 million mobile devices.
Donating a device not only supports military personnel but also contributes to environmental protection by preventing electronic waste. The organization collaborates with a recycling partner that securely dismantles devices and resells components when possible.
