Assemblyman Brian Miller, representing New Hartford and serving as the Ranking Minority Member of the Assembly Committee on Transportation, took part in a joint Assembly and Senate Transportation Budget Hearing. The focus was on infrastructure funding, electric vehicle policies, road maintenance, public transportation systems, and safety within New York State.
During the hearing, Miller emphasized prudent use of taxpayer money. “As we assess our transportation funding priorities, we must ensure taxpayer dollars are spent wisely,” he stated. He highlighted the need for a funding plan that balances essential infrastructure needs with fiscal responsibility.
Miller pointed out the critical role of the CHIPS program in supporting local roads but expressed concerns over stagnant budget allocations not keeping pace with inflation. “CHIPS funding is the backbone of our local infrastructure, yet we are struggling just to keep up with worsening road conditions,” he noted. He added that current funding levels only allow for maintaining existing conditions rather than improvements.
He also stressed the importance of budget hearings as an accountability tool for state agencies and a means to advocate for residents’ needs. “These hearings provide a valuable opportunity to ask tough questions and ensure that our constituents’ needs are being met,” Miller said. He acknowledged Commissioner Dominguez, Executive Director Frank Hoare, and other panelists for their contributions to discussions about key projects across New York State. Additionally, he praised the State DOT and Thruway Authority’s use of technology to enhance worker safety.
