State Senator Joseph Griffo and Assemblyman Brian Miller are urging the State University of New York (SUNY) system and the governor to consider using flatware products made in New York. This call to action comes following SUNY’s decision to eliminate plastic utensils and single-use plastics.

Sen. Griffo emphasized the importance of supporting local manufacturers, stating, “Our SUNY schools are funded by New York tax dollars and primarily attended by New York’s residents, so it should go without saying that SUNY schools should take pride in the fine products that are manufactured right here in our state.” He further added, “As more and more people today are seeking to purchase locally made products, we should do everything we can and lead by example to show that we stand with our local manufacturers while remaining environmentally conscious.”

Assemblyman Miller echoed these sentiments, highlighting Sherrill Manufacturing as a prime example of American craftsmanship and resilience. He expressed his belief that partnering with Sherrill Manufacturing for SUNY’s shift away from single-use plastics is not only a practical choice but also a statement of commitment to the state’s economy. Miller emphasized the importance of supporting long-standing New York businesses to preserve jobs in local communities.

Sen. Griffo confirmed that he will be engaging with top SUNY and Office of General Services officials to discuss this proposal further and advocate for its implementation.

The lawmakers’ push for ‘Made in NY’ flatware at SUNY aligns with a broader goal of promoting sustainability and supporting local businesses.
