New York State Senator Joseph Griffo has called on the Legislature to pass a bill aimed at providing tax relief for certain veterans. The legislation, Senate Bill 2028-A, which Griffo cosponsors, seeks to offer a full real property tax exemption for the primary residences of veterans with a 100% service-connected disability. This exemption would apply to properties owned by the veteran and their spouse and cover any real property taxes imposed by local government entities such as counties, cities, towns, villages, or school districts.

Senator Griffo was joined in his appeal by Sean Mutton, a local veteran, and Joseph Fraccola, commander of the CNY Chapter 490 Military Order of the Purple Heart. The bill has been introduced since 2019 and has passed multiple times in the Senate. However, its Assembly counterpart (A.2965-A) remains in committee.

“We are forever grateful to all those who served our great nation in the military,” Sen. Griffo stated. “Disabled veterans likely face significant challenges, financial and otherwise. They deserve relief. This bill will help alleviate some of the financial pressures that they and their families experience and increase their quality of life. It is the least we can do to say, ‘thank you.’”
