New York State Senator Joseph Griffo has introduced a new piece of legislation aimed at enhancing the convenience and safety for residents at gas stations. The proposed Senate Bill 7418 would permit self-service gas stations to implement hands-free gas dispensing by installing hold open clips on gasoline and diesel nozzles. Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara is expected to sponsor similar legislation in the Assembly.
The existing New York Fire Code, which was established several decades ago, permits only some pumps at gas stations to have hold open latches. This regulation is considered outdated given current technology and safety features.
Currently, 49 out of 50 states allow these hold clips, with Massachusetts recently lifting its last restrictions. New York remains the only state enforcing a restrictive ban.
Senator Griffo explained that his bill was prompted by severe winter weather conditions in Central New York and the Mohawk Valley, along with feedback from constituents. “I have heard from constituents about this issue and began to explore and investigate it further,” said Sen. Griffo. “That led to this legislation, which I believe would be supported by many, especially when you consider advances in pump technology and station safety features.”
Assemblyman Santabarbara also supports the bill, highlighting its benefits for individuals with disabilities or limited mobility. “As Chair of the Assembly’s Committee on People with Disabilities, I see this bill as a simple way to make life easier for those who face barriers we don’t always think about,” he stated.
Senator Griffo is also examining regional fuel price disparities within New York State.
