New York State Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-C-Rome, has criticized Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie’s stance on tougher sentences for individuals who attack retail workers. In response to Heastie’s comments, Griffo stated, “Speaker Heastie is out of touch with the needs of businesses in New York, especially those that I represent in the 53rd Senate District. We have seen an increase in retail thefts, assaults on employees and overall lawlessness because of the policies supported by the Speaker and the legislative majorities and because criminals know that there are no consequences for their actions.”

Griffo further emphasized the importance of supporting businesses and protecting their employees, stating, “Enough is enough. Our businesses need help, their employees should be protected and criminals must be held accountable. I will continue to push for action that will bring much needed relief to business owners across the state.”

The Senator has been actively engaging with various stakeholders to address retail theft issues, proposing solutions such as strengthening penalties for shoplifters and providing additional resources to enhance security measures for small businesses. Griffo’s advocacy reflects a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of businesses and their employees in the state of New York.
