The Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) is collaborating with The Carol L. Coombs Business Education, Cultural Activities Center, the Mohawk Valley Latino Association, and the NAACP Oneida County chapter to host an event aimed at raising prostate health awareness among Black and Latino men. The event, titled “Circle of Strength: A Night of Brotherhood and Wellness,” will take place on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Carol L. Crooms Business, Education, Cultural Activities Center located at 1105 Park Avenue in Utica.
This free event is designed specifically for Black and Latino men. Terrance Afer-Anderson will be the guest speaker and will present his film “The Black Walnut.” Following the screening, a panel of physicians will answer questions from attendees and provide information about the importance of regular prostate screenings. Dinner will be provided during the program.
According to organizers, prostate cancer remains the most common cancer among American men and is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in this group. The risk is particularly significant for Black and Latino men. Early diagnosis plays a key role in increasing survival rates.
