Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) and the Oneida County Local Development Corporation (OCLDC) have announced a joint investment of $50,000 to support physician retention in the Mohawk Valley region.
The funding, approved by OCLDC, will be directed toward MVHS’s Resident-to-Attending Bridge Program. This initiative is designed to assist final-year medical residents as they move into permanent attending roles within the community. The program offers mentorship, faculty development, stipends for board preparation, and relocation assistance for those who choose to remain in the area after graduation.
“This investment is a powerful endorsement of our shared commitment to building a sustainable healthcare workforce,” said Darlene Stromstad, FACHE, President/ CEO of MVHS. “We are deeply grateful to OCLDC for recognizing the importance of physician retention as a cornerstone of regional economic vitality.”
According to OCLDC officials, this effort supports their mission of strengthening workforce sectors essential for Oneida County’s stability and quality of life. Healthcare continues to be one of the most important industries in the region, with physician retention seen as crucial for maintaining access to care.
This summer, MVHS welcomed 35 new resident physicians across seven residency programs including Family Medicine, General Surgery, Psychiatry and Pharmacy. Of ten Family Medicine graduates in 2025, six have chosen to stay in the Mohawk Valley with positions such as hospitalists and faculty members.
“This program is not just about retaining talent – it’s about investing in the future of our community,” said Shawna Papale, Executive Director of OCLDC. “We’re proud to partner with MVHS on this initiative and look forward to seeing its impact on both healthcare and economic development in our region.”
The recent $50,000 contribution from OCLDC follows other philanthropic efforts at MVHS that include a $100,000 donation from a former physician and an additional $50,000 grant from a corporate fund aimed at improving simulation training.
