On February 12, 2025, several New York state legislators and officials expressed their opposition to a proposed bill concerning special election legislation. The group includes Griffo, Miller, Blankenbush, Buttenschon, Smullen, Picente, and Lanigan. They have criticized the bill for potentially disenfranchising nearly 800,000 residents in the 21st Congressional District.
“Following significant, legitimate and loud public outcry,” they stated that “the Governor and legislative majorities have paused this outrageous legislation.” However, they believe that the bill should be entirely dismissed due to its potential impact on voter representation.
The proponents of the bill argue it will save money for the state and increase voter participation. However, the opposing legislators assert that “New Yorkers know better,” pointing out that previous changes to election laws have not significantly boosted turnout.
They describe the proposal as “a poor attempt to impede Congress and score political points at their expense.” According to them, it would restrict access to essential services and resources for residents across the district while also affecting national defense assets like the Air Force Research Lab in Rome and Fort Drum in Jefferson County.
They emphasize that “New Yorkers know that they deserve better from their state government than to have their voices silenced because of partisan politics.”
The statement also mentions Congresswoman Elise Stefanik’s nomination passing through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee with an expectation of confirmation. The legislators argue against delaying a special election for her seat as unnecessary political maneuvering that harms constituents by denying them congressional representation.
