The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office announced on Apr. 14 that an investigation is underway following a reported threat of a shooting at Clinton Middle School in the Town of Kirkland. The alleged threat stated that an incident would occur in the school cafeteria on April 17.
This case highlights concerns about student safety and mental health, as well as the response by law enforcement and community agencies to threats involving juveniles.
According to Sheriff Robert M. Maciol, deputies responded early on April 11 after receiving information about the threat. A mental health check was conducted for a 14-year-old female juvenile who was then taken to Wynn Hospital for evaluation. Further investigation led officers to identify additional juveniles involved in the incident.
Later that day, a second female juvenile aged 13 was also located, interviewed, and transported for mental health evaluation. Investigators visited another juvenile’s home in Kirkland and secured multiple firearms. At a separate residence in Boonville, firearms were voluntarily turned over by a fourth juvenile who is not considered a suspect.
On April 12, both female juveniles were cited for Aggravated Threat of Mass Harm and referred to county probation services. The investigation found that a third juvenile male aged 13 was involved; he was charged with Conspiracy in the Second Degree after being brought to authorities by his guardian on April 13.
The sheriff’s office said that “the investigation remains open and additional charges are possible regarding the involved individuals.” Several units within the sheriff’s office worked alongside local school officials during this process. Authorities expressed appreciation for parental cooperation throughout the case.
Additional support will be provided by Oneida County Office of Mental Health to students and families at Clinton Central School District.
