New York is currently facing a housing affordability crisis, and there are concerns that a new proposal may exacerbate the situation. Governor Hochul and Albany policymakers are considering a mandate for fire sprinkler systems in all new single-family homes. This potential regulation by the state’s Fire Prevention and Building Code Council could increase construction costs by $20,000 to $30,000.

Presently, homebuyers in New York have the option to include sprinklers in their homes if they choose. However, it appears that most opt out after weighing the benefits against the costs.

Critics of the proposal argue that this mandate is unnecessary and expensive, as well as limiting consumer choice. They urge action to prevent this rule from becoming law.

A petition has been initiated to oppose what is being described as an “ill-conceived proposal.” The message being sent to Albany is clear: “No to unfunded mandates!”
