New York State Senator Joseph Griffo announced the passage of a bill in the Senate that aims to provide tax relief for certain veterans. The legislation, known as Senate Bill 1183, offers a full real property tax exemption for veterans with a 100% service-connected disability. This exemption applies to their primary residence, provided it is owned by the veteran and their spouse. The relief covers any real property taxes levied by counties, cities, towns, villages, or school districts.
The bill has been introduced since 2019 and has seen multiple approvals in the Senate. Its companion bill in the Assembly is currently under committee review.
Senator Griffo expressed his satisfaction with the Senate’s decision: “I am pleased that the Senate has once again passed this bill, and I have urged the Assembly to take similar action,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of this measure for disabled veterans and their families: “This tax exemption will greatly help disabled veterans and their families and is necessary to increase the quality of life for those who sacrificed so much to protect our country. It is one way that we can show our gratitude to these veterans for their service to our nation.”
