State Senator Joseph A. Griffo and Assemblyman Angelino released a statement addressing the recent shooting at the SUNY Morrisville campus. They noted that they had been in contact with SUNY Chancellor King, College President Rogers, as well as state and campus police following the incident.

In their statement, they said: “We appreciate the extraordinary efforts of college officials, law enforcement, volunteer firefighters and emergency personnel from around the region who responded to and are investigating this incident, and we look forward to a resolution in this case.

Given the fluid and tense situation right after the shooting occurred, we chose to not immediately visit the campus so that we would not interfere with the ongoing investigation and to allow police to do their work.

On Wednesday, Nov. 5, we visited the campus, where we had the opportunity to meet with President Rogers, state and campus police leadership and the president of the Student Government Organization.

This meeting was an important opportunity to receive updates on this case and to further discuss ways that we and the state can assist the college at this time and in the future.

As a result of this meeting, we will consider new technology, resources and policies that will hopefully prevent future incidents and pursue initiatives that will keep students, faculty and staff safe locally and at SUNY campuses across the state.

We also recognize the valuable role that SUNY Morrisville plays in the community and will work to ensure that residents also feel safe and comfortable with the presence of the college and its students.”

The lawmakers emphasized their intention to review potential measures for enhancing safety at SUNY Morrisville as well as other campuses throughout New York State. They also acknowledged ongoing cooperation between local authorities, university officials, emergency responders, and law enforcement agencies during both response efforts and continuing investigations into the shooting.
