New York State Senator Joseph Griffo has called on the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) to reject proposed rate increases by National Grid for electric and gas services. The proposed changes would lead to a 15% increase in electric bills and a 20% increase in gas bills for customers.

In his letter to the PSC, Sen. Griffo emphasized the financial difficulties many New Yorkers face. “Many New Yorkers and their families are facing significant financial challenges and are struggling to make ends meet,” he wrote. While acknowledging the costs of providing reliable energy services and the state’s energy transition efforts, he believes now is not the time for such rate hikes.

Sen. Griffo also addressed concerns regarding the New York Power Authority’s (NYPA) plan to raise rates for preference power customers. Currently, municipalities, school districts, businesses, and nonprofits benefit from NYPA’s rate of $12.88 per megawatt hour, which is set to rise to $33.05/MWH over four years.

“While I recognize the need to ensure that NYPA’s infrastructure is up to date and reliable, this rate increase will create significant challenges for communities, businesses, families and New Yorkers who are already struggling financially,” Sen. Griffo stated in his letter to NYPA’s Board of Trustees.

The senator expressed concern that these increases could drive residents out of state due to rising living costs and force local businesses elsewhere where operating expenses are lower.

Public comments on National Grid’s proposed increases will be accepted until February 28 through various means including online submissions at https://dps.ny.gov/event/national-grid-psc-holds-public-statement-hearing-albany-regarding-national-grids-rate.

Similarly, NYPA is accepting public feedback on its proposal until February 25 via email at secretaryoffice@nypa.gov.

“I have heard from many constituents about these proposed rate increases and how the additional costs will impact their daily lives,” Sen. Griffo noted. He criticized both National Grid’s and NYPA’s proposals amid widespread financial challenges faced by residents due in part to state policies like the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA).
