The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office took part in the Rome YMCA Annual Healthy Kids Day Event and Drug Enforcement Administration Drug Take Back Day on April 28. The office partnered with the Center for Family Life and Recovery and the Utica Police Department to collect unused and unwanted medication for safe disposal.

The event was held to encourage community engagement around children’s health and safety, as well as responsible disposal of prescription drugs. By working together, local organizations aimed to reduce risks associated with unused medications in homes.

According to organizers, collecting old medications helps prevent accidental poisoning, misuse, or environmental harm that can result from improper disposal. These efforts are part of ongoing initiatives across communities nationwide.

The Sheriff’s Office said its participation reflects a commitment to public safety and collaboration with other agencies. The Center for Family Life and Recovery also supported the collection process during the event.

Looking ahead, officials say similar events may be organized in the future to further promote health awareness and drug safety within Oneida County.
