On August 11, 2022, deputies from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office arrested a City of Rome man for breaking into storage units in the City of Rome.
According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, Richard W. Cayton, age 31, from Rome was arrested on burglary charges.
At approximately 1:30 AM on August 11, 2022, Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol units were dispatched to Colonial Self Storage II, located at 5667 Rome New London Road in the City of Rome after a report that someone was breaking into the storage units. Once on scene, Deputies conducted an area check and observed numerous storage units that had damage to their locks. During the investigation, the Deputy observed Cayton exit a storage unit and immediately flee into a wooded area. A perimeter was immediately established, by members of the Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police. After a search of the wooded area, Cayton was located and taken into custody.
Cayton was arrested on two counts of burglary in the third degree, class D felonies. Cayton was processed and held at the Oneida County Jail pending arraignment in CAP Court. Cayton is also currently on parole in New York State and the Sheriff’s Office notified them of his arrest. A second suspect also fled the scene and is currently being sought, the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
