State Senator Joseph Griffo has expressed concern over the conditions in New York's correctional facilities, calling for immediate reforms. He criticized the current state of prisons and pointed to the HALT Act as part of the problem, saying that these policies have led to unsafe environments.

Griffo stated, "The current environment in the state's prisons reflects poorly on the HALT Act and other failed policies that have been put in place and supported by the legislative majorities and the governor." He called for these policies to be repealed and replaced with initiatives aimed at improving safety for corrections officers and civilian staff.

He highlighted staffing issues and excessive overtime as areas needing attention. Griffo emphasized that employees require better training, resources, and tools, including body scanners and drug-detecting equipment, to perform their duties safely.

Griffo shared insights gained from visits to facilities within his Senate District and meetings with stakeholders. He committed to ongoing engagement with key figures such as the governor, DOCCS commissioner, staff members, and NYSCOPBA to advocate for necessary reforms.

"I will continue to engage with the governor, DOCCS commissioner and the staff and NYSCOPBA," Griffo affirmed. "I will advocate for systemwide reform that will bring about needed changes to the state’s correctional facilities."
