The City of Utica has taken swift measures to address hazardous conditions at the Algonquin Apartments, located at 1434 Genesee Street. On April 1st, an emergency inspection led to the building being declared Unsafe and Unfit for Human Occupancy.
City Codes Enforcement, along with the Utica Fire Department and Utica Police Department, conducted the inspection following multiple complaints from residents. The effort was initiated by Mayor Galime as an immediate response to these concerns. A tenant’s cooperation allowed code enforcement officials access to the building, prompting a coordinated multi-agency response.
During the inspection, approximately 20 individuals were found living in unsafe conditions. Residents were instructed to evacuate immediately, and several were relocated that Friday. Support services were made available on-site to address housing, health, and pet care needs.
The city is now pursuing legal action in New York State Supreme Court to secure the property and ensure any remaining occupants are removed. The closure of the building may occur prior to court proceedings.
Mayor Galime stated, “Property owners need to get with the program, and frankly, landlords like this take advantage of a vulnerable population who has nowhere else to go. The decision to shut this building down over the course of a coordinated week’s long effort is our only option, and a pro-active approach is absolutely necessary before disaster strikes.”
Utica officials remain committed to safeguarding residents’ dignity and safety and plan continued action against negligent property management practices.
